Police Drop Speeding Fine After Emergency Rush To Give Birth


It was the perfect excuse - she was about to give birth, he was under instructions to drive her to hospital as fast as possible.
The trouble is they were pinged by a speed camera doing 73 kilometres an hour in a 50 zone.
The police issued a ticket and wouldn't back down - until today
Kayden Robinson's entry into the world was a speedy one - his father copped a $170 fine as he rushed his partner to hospital after complications during a home birth.
Mother Kim Wallis says it was a genuine life or death dash after her baby's umbilical cord got in the way.
'It would have killed him his head would have put pressure on the chord and camera grip it would have cut off his oxygen it would have killed him,' says Wallis.
When the midwife discovered the problem, she sent Wallis straight to hospital for an emergency Caesarean section.
Wallis's then partner wouldn't be interviewed about his mercy dash today but he wrote to the police saying: 'The midwife ordered myself to ready my car as there was no time to source an ambulance. I rushed Kim in my car to Dunedin Hospital. On the way I noticed the flash of the speed camera but as you could imagine this was not my prime concern.'
3 News consulted another midwife who confirmed the need for speed.
Jacquie Newell told 3 News: 'It's probably one of the most serious situations you can have.
'There's absolutely no way that baby can be born naturally and the only way that baby can be born alive is by emergency Caesarean section.'
But the police weren't persuaded, concorsi camera di commercio saying: 'Whilst the reason you provide is understood, the amount of excess speed involved is too great for a warning to be given notwithstanding the advised circumstances.'
But when 3 News enquired today the police cited human error and quickly dropped the fine.
While Wallis is delighted to have her baby home safesoundshe hopes the early speeding ticket he helped earn isn't a sign of things to come.
