Municipal Election 08


The race could be a tight one after campaigning quickly turned it's focus on the 'Villagegate' fiasco.
The campaign turned vicious after confidential documents belonging to Peter Ladner were leaked to the media.
The documents outlined a council in-camera vote on Oct. 14 to lend up to $100 million to the developer of the Olympic Village project.
The argument about the public's right to know and the city's right to conduct business took some of the heat off Robertson's failure to pay an outstanding SkyTrain fine.
Some other interesting races to follow are:
- Prince George: The city has only had five mayors over the past 50 years, with each serving, on average, for a decade. Tonight will see a new mayor join the legacy with a focus on city council veterans Dan Rogers and Don Zurowsk.
- White Rock: A new mayor will take the city's top-spot since Judy Forster has stepped down.
- Victoria: Three-term mayor Alan Lowe is moving on and linksys camera the battle to take his spot is being waged by councillor Dean Fortin and rookie politician Rob Reid.
- Richmond: A trio of Halsey-Brandts are on the ballot. Greg Halsey-Brandt, former mayor and itouch camera MLA, is running for one of eight council seats, while his wife Evelina and ex-wife Sue are both seeking re-election.
- Surrey: Former city councillor Gary Robinson, who served as a Surrey councillor for 13 years from 1987 to 1999, is running again. Robinson retired from municipal politics in 1999 after admitting that he had a cocaine habit. He's said to have been clean for a year.
While there are a lot of tight races and interesting stories bound to come out of tonight's results, some positions have already been filled.
Acclaimed mayors include: Alert Bay, Barriere district, Belcarra, Castlegar, Clearwater district, Clinton, Fort Nelson, Fraser Lake, Gold River, Hazelton, Kent district, Ladysmith, Lake Country district, Langford, Lantzville district, Lumby, Masset, McBride, Midway, New Hazelton district, the city of North Vancouver, North Vancouver district, Port McNeill, Queen Charlotte, Salmo, Sayward, Sparwood district, Tofino district, View Royal and network camera software Zeballos.
Of those acclaimed mayors, six are councillors who are moving up to nab the top spot, two are former mayorsone lucky politician -- Edward 'Ted' Lewis from Zeballos -- has never been a member of the municipal government before.
